WHAT IS THIS COURSE ABOUT?

This is one day course during which you will make your own leather clutch bag and take it home with you.
You will be able to choose your own leather and zip colours from a selection of materials we have available.
You will learn sewing techniques such as zips, different types of stitching, attaching magnetic closures.
You will receive an induction on our industrial and domestic sewing machines and understand their characteristics, limits and specifications.

WHAT WILL BE TAUGHT?

Adapting patterns and understanding tricks to customise them to your specifications
Understanding leather weight and features, choosing materials according to with the specific look/feel you want to achieve
Leather cutting, marking and finishing techniques
Learning how to sew a zip
Learning major characteristics of different types of industrial sewing machines and exercise on them
Depending on your level of experience, we might be able to finish earlier and have the opportunity to learn some extra leather techniques:
Different closure techniques, magnets, studs and pop buttons
Leather glues and finishing products
The use of salpa to back leather and suede to lin it
Different types of seams and different ways to sew and finish a zip

WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND WHAT IS THE LEVEL?

This course is suitable for beginners as well as for people with some basic experience of machine sewing.
You should be able to use measurements and understand verbal and written Englishs as well as have hands and leg mobility.

 

ARE THERE ANY OTHER COSTS? IS THERE ANYTHING I NEED TO BRING?

All materials are included.

 

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT AND HOW MANY WE WILL BE?

Through practical demonstrations both to the group and to individuals. Group discussions and feedback are encouraged.
There will be a maximum of 3 students and you will be helped by the two of us, making sure each student receives dedicated and tailored help.

 

ON THE DAY:

Teas and coffes will be provided and, in the case of 6 to 8 hours session, we will have half an hour lunch break.
There are two coffe shops and free parking space on site.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW:

This course is very intensive; punctuality is necessary.
Our classes are refundable up to 48 hours from their starting date and the payment will be sent back 48 hours from the info been given in writing. Please let us know as soon as possible if you can’t attend, thank you.
Cutting materials is usually done standing at a high table and you might be using special glues and knives, or with industrial sewing machines.
If you have asthma, a breathing problem or any health condition we should be aware of, or if any of this might be difficult for you, please inform us as soon as possible.
You will receive Health and Safety instructions for using these and you will be asked to sign a release form by the end of the induction.
Sadly, our studio is on the first floor and we don’t have wheelchair facilities. We are very sorry about this which, unfortunately, does not depends on us but on the site features.
Wifi is not provided but there is a coffee shop nearby which does.

ABOUT THE TEACHERS

Our names are Sara and Melissa and we are the founders and owners of The London Leather Workshop.
With 15 years of experience in sewing and pattern making, we discovered our passion for teaching while training people during our working careere.
We have both studied fashion and costume in Italy, as well as worked for different small to medium size Italian brands on both designing and sampling positions, gaining a wide range of skills.
After the Italian years, we moved to London in 2011, where we had the possibility to learn different approaches to creativity and practical knowledge in the fashion and design world.
During our carriers, we worked in the leather goods, accessories, textile, evening dresses and bridal high-end markets as designers, sample makers and product developers. We also gained experience in fashion, graphic design and illustration.
Our approach is personal and flexible and we support students and startups looking for a creative environment offering multiple services at reasonable prices.
We are two passionate friends that love teaching others and hoping to transmit our love for the arts and crafts!
